New enrollment opportunities for the 26/27 Micro-School!

General Announcement

Attention 7th grade families!

Pine Lake Middle School is offering a Community Micro-school next year, and we invite current 7th graders (incoming 8th graders) to apply NOW. This unique program focuses on sustainability and community impact, blending learning across multiple subject curriculum next year, numerous field trips and project-based learning experiences - within the school day - to explore real-world sustainability challenges. It’s an ideal opportunity for creative, curious, and hands-on learners, who enjoy deep thinking and want to make a meaningful difference in their communities.

Program Details:

  • The Micro-school takes place at Pine Lake during the regular school day, following the ISD school calendar.
  • Students will participate in Micro-school versions of Social Studies and Science, replacing their standard 8th-grade courses.
  • To enroll, students must take Physical Science and Social Studies as part of the program.
  • Classes will be held in a two-period block (for example, periods 1 and 2), where students will learn as a cohort of up to 32 students in an engaging, collaborative setting.
  • Students will continue with their regular schedule for Math, PE/Health, and Electives.
  • The curriculum integrates Washington State K-12 Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) Learning Standards in Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science.

Science Considerations:

  • Science instruction follows the NGSS Middle School Standards for Physical Science, with a focus on applying sustainable solutions to real-world problems.
  • Students on Science Path 2 (taking Biology for high school credit in 8th grade) will not be able to participate in this program.

Let us know if you would like to apply by talking with your student's school counselor now! — we’d love to share more about this exciting opportunity!
