Pine Lake Middle School Course Descriptions
CORE CLASSES
Core classes are designed to support and challenge students. Students are required to take a full-year of Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and Science at each grade level. Advanced and accelerated options are available to students in Language Arts, Math and Science and placement in these courses is done using an informed self-select model.
ADDITIONAL CLASSES
- Homeroom
- Health and PE – Seventh and Eighth grade students are required to take one trimester of Health and two trimesters of PE each year. Sixth graders take one trimester of Health and one trimester of PE. Eighth grade students may be eligible to take Independent Health and PE outside of their school day.
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT CLASSES – IMPORTANT, PLEASE NOTE
Effective 2019-20, high school level credit courses (Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, Spanish 1) taken in middle school will automatically be added to the student’s transcript. This is in accordance with District Regulation 2410. Unless a student and family request otherwise, a student who has successfully completed high school courses before attending high school will be given high school credit, which will apply toward fulfilling high school graduation requirements, if adequate documentation establishes either of the following:
- The course was taken with high school students, the academic level of the course exceeds the requirements for 7th and 8th grade classes, and the student successfully passed by completing the same course requirements and examinations as the high school students enrolled in the class; or
- The academic level of the course exceeds the requirements for 7th and 8th grade classes and the course would qualify for high school credit, because the course is similar or equivalent to a course offered at a District high school.
Students who have successfully completed high school level courses under the above circumstances will not be required to take an additional competency examination or perform any other additional assignment to receive credit.
For courses taken at District schools, high school credit will be given automatically and will appear on the student’s high school transcript unless the student and family request otherwise. Students and their families will be given an opportunity before the end of the 11th grade to remove such credits entirely from the student’s transcript, or to have the courses transcribed only for credit toward graduation and not included in the student’s high school grade point average calculation. Please note that once these credits have been removed or designated as only for graduation, no further changes will be permitted.
A student who would like credit for courses taken outside of District schools should consult with their counselor to submit appropriate documentation utilizing form 2410F2. Such documentation can be submitted to add the credit at any time before the end of the 11th grade. Requests are generally made during the junior credit evaluation. Please note that once these credits are added to a student’s high school transcript, they cannot be removed and no further changes will be permitted.
6th Grade Electives
Please note that all elective classes are subject to change and are dependent on staffing and the number of requests.
Year-long
- Beginning Band (Brass/Woodwinds) ($) – Beginning Band is for students who are interested in learning flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, trumpet and trombone. Second and sometimes third trimester options are open to bass clarinet, saxophone, french horn, euphonium, tuba and percussion (drums). Students are required for the class to practice at home 15 minutes per day/5 days a week. Weekly skills tests are given. Students will learn reading strategies for music and develop fundamental skills in tone and technique. Music note reading skills are not required but strongly recommended. Students with previous experience will still need to enroll with 6th grade classmates.

- Elective Video
- Beginning Orchestra ($) – The sixth grade orchestra provides students the opportunity to learn the violin, viola, cello or bass. This is a performance-based class for students with little or no previous string instrument experience. Students will develop individual technique on their instrument and learn large ensemble performance skills. Performances take place at school in the evening. Students with previous experience on their instrument may audition for the seventh grade orchestra; auditions take place in the spring.

- Girls Treble Chorus: ($) – This is a beginning performance-based class for 6th grade girls who enjoy singing a variety of repertoire. Students will develop their singing through basic vocal technique. In addition, students will learn sight singing, music theory, and history. Performance opportunities include but are not limited to: concerts, assemblies, festivals, and community events.

- 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Boys Chorus ($) – This is a performance-based class for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys who enjoy singing a variety of repertoire. Students will develop or advance their singing through vocal technique specific to their voice type and voice changes. In addition, students will learn sight singing, music theory, and history. Performance opportunities include but are not limited to: concerts, assemblies, festivals, and community events.

- Elective Video
- Math Lab – This year-long class is designed for middle school students who demonstrate a need for additional learning support in the area of Math. This is a comprehensive system of support with whole-class, small group, and individualized learning. Group instruction focuses on developing mathematical reasoning, communication and problem solving while the technology-based activities focus on highly adaptive, individualized instruction and practices. Through mindset lessons and contextualized learning, this course provides an environment for fostering perseverance as students recognize that their efforts do matter. Placement in this support class requires teacher or counselor recommendation.

ELD (English Language Development) – This course will build student proficiency in the academic language needed to fully access the core curriculum throughout the rest of their day in general education classes. These classes focus on oral language development, explicit instruction in the structure of the English language, and academic language development through reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Requirements: WIDA Screener Assessment. ELD Elective Video.
Trimester
- Computer Science 1 ($) – Come discover where your creativity and problem solving will lead you as you learn the foundations of computer science. This is an introductory computer science course where students will learn the basics of computer coding. Students will learn the Python Coding language and focus on problem solving, design, and programming. Throughout the class, students will gain the skills in code writing, debugging, and analysis. These skills will support students to work independently and in small teams to create games, art projects, and more.
- Introduction to Speech and Debate – This trimester class will provide students with opportunity to learn and practice the skills of public speaking and debating in a fun and safe learning space. You will learn to speak to audiences with confidence and enthusiasm. We will develop these skills with a number of activities: Storytelling, Impromptu, Humorous and Dramatic Interpretation, Trivium Debate, and Oratory.
- Introduction To Woodshop ($) – In this class, 6th graders are introduced to the PLMS Woodshop. Along with safety, students learn how to use a variety of hand tools along with some power tools such as, band saw, belt sanders, drill press and lathe. Students will make six projects in this class: Golf Tee Game, String Art, Small cutting board, Picture frame, Wooden pen, Pencil Holder.
7th Grade Electives

Year-long
- Band – Concert ($) – This class continues the opportunity for students who learned instruments in the sixth grade. Students will experience performing a variety of music for concerts and solo/ensemble music festivals. All of the instruments will be included in this group and opportunities to try secondary instruments will include Piccolo, Bass Clarinet, Baritone Saxophone, Tuba, Baritone Horn and Bassoon.

- Boys Chorus ($) – This is a performance-based class for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys who enjoy singing a variety of repertoire. Performance opportunities include but are not limited to: concerts, assemblies, festivals, and community events.

- Elective Video
- Intermediate Orchestra ($) – Seventh grade orchestra students will continue to develop their individual technique and large ensemble performance skills. This performance-based class will allow violin, viola, cello or bass students to learn and expand their left hand technique, vibrato, positions, bow, and rhythmic knowledge. Previous orchestral experience is required. Performances take place at school in the evening, with one fieldtrip performance opportunity in the fall. A wide variety of musical styles are explored.

- Math Support Class – This year-long class is designed for middle school students who are two or more years behind in their math skills. This is a comprehensive system of support with whole-class, small-group, and individualized learning. Group instruction focuses on developing mathematical reasoning, communication and problem-solving while the technology-based activities focus on highly adaptive, individualized instruction and practices. Through mindset lessons and contextualized learning, MATH 180 provides an environment for fostering perseverance as students recognize that their efforts do matter. Placement in this support class requires teacher or counselor recommendation.

Trimester
- Art ($) – This trimester class gives students the opportunity and space to creatively explore elements and principles of art/design. Students will use a sketchbook to practice drawing techniques and plan projects. A variety of projects using mediums such as pen, ink, pencil, pastels, colored pencil, paint, and glass will be offered.
- Computer Science 2 ($) – This course builds on the basic knowledge of Python from (Computer Science 1). Students will learn to draw lines and basic shapes and animate them. They will learn about program structures, mouse and keyboard inputs, and time. Students completing this course will be able to write dense and well organized code. The skills learned will continue to support students to work independently and in small teams.

- Computer Science 3 ($) – This course builds on the basic knowledge of Python learned in Computer Science 1 & 2. Students learn to use images from outside their program to create sprites and sprite-based animations for use in graphical programs. Students explore more in-depth coding concepts such as the list data structure and functions (if time). The skills learned will continue to support students to work independently and in small teams.

- Introduction to Speech and Debate – This trimester class will provide students with opportunity to learn and practice the skills of public speaking and debating in a fun and safe learning space. You will learn to speak to audiences with confidence and enthusiasm. We will develop these skills with a number of activities: Storytelling, Impromptu, Humorous and Dramatic Interpretation, Trivium Debate, and Oratory.
- Advanced Speech and Debate – This trimester class takes speaking and debating to a competitive level. The course material is centered on speech and debate events that are offered at middle school and high school competitions. Activities include: Forensics Debate (1st/2nd Affirmative Team vs. 1st/2nd Negative Team), Extemporaneous Current Event Speech, Duo Interpretation (Two people presenting an excerpt from a play or script), Programmed Reading, Declamation (presentation of an excerpt from a famous speech), Oratory, and Congressional Debate. Students will be assessed on both speaking skills and speech content.

- Elective Video
- Competitive Speech and Debate – This trimester class will consist of NSDA recognized events such as Public Forum Debate, Congressional Debate, and competitive Interpretation events with more of an emphasis on dramatic skills. There will also be a strong emphasis on Mock Trial and the development of skills for the Mock Trial club at Skyline High School. Students are allowed to be enrolled during the same year in Advanced Speech and Debate and Competitive Speech and Debate. Finally, all students enrolled in this elective will be required to participate in either one speech and debate tournament or one mock trial event.
- Prerequisite: Completion of both the Introduction to Speech and Debate and the Advanced Speech and Debate electives and/or have participated in the PLMS Speech and Debate Club for at least one full year.
- Integrated Projects ($) – Integrated Projects is offered during Trimester 2 and takes place in the Woodshop. Some of the projects in this class are made from wood, but students will integrate other materials while working with electrical, glass, concrete and art supplies. The electrical project will give students the opportunity to do soldering and assemble an electrical project. The glass project gives students experience in cutting and grinding class for a design that they will put in a concrete stepping/garden stone. Concrete is mixed in class and poured into molds. Students will also get to design and build a race car that is powered by CO2 cartridges. The highlight of this unit happens on the race days when student’s cars are raced against each other. We typically make 5 projects in this class. Here are some examples: Electrical Tree or Heart, Lathe Project, Stepping Stone, Miniature Adirondack Chair, CO2 Race Car, Personalized Wooden Letter, String Art.
- Woodshop 1 ($) – Woodshop 1 takes place in Trimester 1. It is open to all 7th and 8th graders. The projects that they do in this class depends on if they have already had Woodshop 1 in 7th grade. All 7th graders will make projects that are in the “Rookie” category. Any 8th graders that made that project in 7th grade will then have the option to make the “Veteran” project. The Veteran project is similar, but requires more experience. We typically make 5-6 projects in this class. Here are some examples: Cutting Board, Door Stops, Wooden Toy, Wood pen on lathe, Book/media holder, Napkin Holder, Folding table or crate, Paper Towel Holder.
- Woodshop 2 ($) – Woodshop 2 takes place in Trimester 3. It’s called Woods 2 because it is the 2nd Woodshop class of the school year. It is open to all 7th and 8th graders. The projects that they do in this class depends on if they have already had Woods 2 in 7th grade. All 7th graders will make projects in the “Rookie” category. Any 8th graders that made that project in 7th grade will then have the option to make the “Veteran” project. The Veteran project is similar, but requires more experience. We typically make 5-6 projects in this class. Here are some examples: Step Stool or Bench, Ice Cream Scoop, Clipboard or Checker board, Yoyo, Coat Rack or Shelf, Plant Stand, Scrap Wood Truck.
- WAVE- Introduction to Character Strong Leadership ($) – This is a ONE TRIMESTER introduction to leadership class. In this class, you will learn how to lead people by building a positive influence in others’ lives. WAVE also combines 21st-century multimedia techniques, leadership and community service learning. Students will practice leadership skills both at Pine Lake and in the greater community. This class promises to be unlike any class you have ever taken! Come ride the WAVE!
- Yearbook – This trimester class will introduce students to the behind the scenes production of the PLMS yearbook. Students will have an opportunity to take pictures, upload and manage pictures using the Josten’s online yearbook program, design layouts and create actual yearbook pages.Criteria: Students in this elective should be able to work independently, as well as part of a team. We are looking for students with new and creative ideas for the yearbook, who are detail oriented and have good technology/computer skills.
8th Grade Electives

Year-long
- Wind Ensemble ($) – This is the highest level band offered at Pine Lake. Most students will have advanced skills on instruments and perform a high level of music for concerts, music festivals, and field trips. Opportunities for solos and small ensembles will be provided for students in this class in conjunction with large group rehearsals.

- Advanced Orchestra ($) – The eighth grade orchestra is a high profile, performance-based ensemble for students continuing their playing excellence on the violin, viola, cello or bass. Students will continue to develop their individual techniques and performance skills, as well as large and small ensemble skills. Students will continue to refine, expand on, and apply their vibrato, positions, advanced bowing and rhythmic techniques to a wide variety of musical styles. Performance opportunities are plentiful at school and in the community.

- Elective Video
- Spanish I – This high school credit class is offered to 8th graders and will focus on listening comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking in Spanish. Students will also explore the various cultures that speak Spanish natively. Spanish I students at the middle school level will learn at the same rate as the first level students at Skyline and Issaquah High. It is recommended that students should have a B+ or better average in their 7th grade Language Arts class.

- Diverse Needs Peer Tutor – For students who want an opportunity to enhance their leadership skills or just provide friendship in the LRC2 (Learning Resource Center 2) classroom. The peer tutor helps students in areas such as academics, art projects, playing games, team building activities and developing conversation and social skills. Peer tutors learn about reaching across specific barriers in communication using assistive technology devices, computer technology, sign language and communication techniques for classmates with disabilities. The course is a one trimester elective, although TA’s may request placement for more trimesters, space permitting.
- Special Needs Physical Education Teacher Assistant (Adaptive PE TA) – This is a year-long course for students who want to give back to their community. Students will play a supportive role to help bridge gaps in learning for students with special needs (LRCII). Additionally, students will act as peer tutors to build positive influence in the lives of others. Throughout the year students will learn about empathy for others and gain skills in working with students who have physical or mental challenges. TA’s will learn about reaching across specific barriers such as communicating, handling stress, and making friends. This is your chance to be a big brother or sister and have an immediate impact every day in a PE class environment. Please talk to Mr. Gray if you have questions about this unique opportunity.
- WAVE LEADER ($) – This elective is an 8th GRADE ONLY, YEAR-LONG Leadership position. WAVE Leaders will learn that leadership is about building positive influence with others and by serving those around us. You will work alongside Mr. Ensey to plan and run school-wide assemblies, fundraisers (Gift Drive, Food Drive, etc.), spirit weeks and produce the Pine Lake Morning Show. WAVE Leaders are responsible, resourceful and respectful, have excellent communication skills and take pride in their school. Above all, WAVE leaders show kindness and selflessness to others. Students must apply for this leadership position and will be selected on the recommendations of a large panel of 6th-8th grade teachers and administrators. If you are in music or Spanish, you can still be a WAVE Leader, but you will need to take Independent, online Health and PE at an additional cost.
